Livestock Expert and Autism Crusader Visits EKU

The horse capital of the world is welcoming a woman who relates to animals a bit differently than most of us.
“I knew a horse that was scared to death of black cowboy hats,” said Dr. Temple Grandin. “White cowboy hats were fine, black hats were scary.”
Temple Grandin has become an animal expert, and an autism expert.
“I’m a visual thinker, my ability in art was always encouraged and i turned that into my designing job,” said Dr. Grandin.
Those visual skills and Grandin’s story were transformed into an emmy-winning film by HBO starring Claire Danes.
Thursday, the livestock revolutionary with high-functioning autism visits Eastern Kentucky University to share her wisdom and experience on both.
“I’m going to be talking tonight about how animals are sensory-based thinkers,” said Dr. Grandin. “They’re memories are stored as pictures, smells, sights, touch-sensations. It’s not word-based it’s sensory-based.”
