Temple Grandin to Speak at University of Nevada

Temple Grandin is a remarkable woman who has used her insight into autism to help improve the treatment of animals.
And she’s speaking tonight at the University of Nevada, Reno.
Temple Grandin has a doctorate in animal science and teaches at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
She has Asperger’s syndrome, which is a kind of autism. “Some people on the continuum are good at math, others are word thinkers. Skills tend to be uneven… Good at one thing bad at something else.”
Grandin says she’s a visual thinker, who thinks in words. She discovered that helps her see things the way animals do.
When she visited a cattle processing plant, she realized that things were set up the wrong way. “When I first started working with cattle, I was trying to figure out why do they go through the chute really well in one place, but not in another place. They are noticing visual detail that we tend not to notice, like a chain hanging down, a reflection, a shadow.”
