Brooklyn Autism Center Gives Kids One-on-One Help
The Autism News | English
A Brooklyn Heights school for Autistic children is giving kids the close attention they need to help them thrive.
The Brooklyn Autism Center on Remsen St. only has nine students in their day program to makes sure each child gets individual attention from their teachers and volunteers.
“It’s one-to-one behavioral analysis and it’s tough to find a school that does that.” said educational director Jaime Nicklas.
Teachers in the five-year-old program are rotating from child to child throughout the day – constantly evaluating their growth and development.
The carousel of instructors also helps the children work on developing their communication and social skills – both delayed by the developmental disorder.
The center also invites children from the neighborhood to come to the center and play with the autistic children once a week.
“It’s important that we get them to a level where they can function in a less restrictive environment by developing peers,” said Nicklas.
Teachers and volunteers said
their time working with the children is well spent.
