It’s my theory that my son was supposed to be a fish and God mixed him up as a human at the last second he would live underwater if he could. When we go swimming he lodges himself underwater as long as he can stand it. He’ll come up for a quick breath and back down. His ability to hold his breath under water is amazing. We think he is non verbal? He just speaks fish! Lol

It definitely is a sensory thing for my son too. He is 9 1/2 and he has gone through fascination with running water, dumping water from a cup, etc, bodies of water, lakes, streams, etc.. and will go through being more or less interested in these various things at different times. Sometimes he will “stim” on water and other times he just seems like he is drawn to the mere presence of water, so I think it is a visual thing as well. I am drawn to water, as many of us are, we just understand that we have to be careful around bodies of water, this is a difficult lesson for some on the spectrum unfortunately. I also try to give him good “outlets” for his interest in it, like more frequent baths if he wants them, or allowing him to dump water only in the sink and not on the floor!

My son is obsessed with water. He loves to touch water, loves to see water, he loves to be in water so much that we gave him one-on-one swimming lesson.

My son also has a fascination with running water, seems to sooth him especially when he needs a sensory moment. I tend to allow him to simply use the bathroom sink supervised until he walks away from it. I am sure if we deny him this outlet it would be more of a negative reaction then allowing him some water time. I also am posting for a very important matter that needs the help of all who have autistic asd asperger’s kids or whom themselves are any of these. I am on a personal mission to have free autism based education incorporated into the public school system. As many of you know private schools for autism are extremely expensive and in many cases autism based education is not available instead there is a special education program that does not fit the autism criteria.
