This is why some family members still refuse to believe a dx. "He's just a normal, energetic little boy"...who throws furniture across the room when he's upset and needs to be medicated just to get through the school day - at a specialist autism school - with only one incidence of violence.

I love this idea so much! As a side note, theater was my favorite in high school...I think it helped with some of the same things discussed in this article, even though I was not classified on the autism spectrum, it helped with my shyness and feeling more confident around others.

The continued habit of this site to post any type of unverified nonsense that comes down the pipe, and only snippets of some things that are more thoroughly supported is making it a continued hazard to the autism community instead of an asset.

"This mirror neuron system is impaired in individuals with ASD and better understanding the neurobiology of this system could help in the development of new treatments."

The type of statement above should NEVER be made in any thoughtful, reputable forum, or other place of news without being supported. The Autism News' continued habit of only posting the sensational bits of common rumor place in the the trash news category. That is too bad, as it appears that I was one of it's very few supporters, but I can longer even try to support a site that won't make even the tiniest effort at accurate and/or productivity, yet holds itself out as an autism advocate.

They do make this sound pretty bad, but as the school official said, there could be times when this was a kindness instead of a cruelty. I think that if they set him up a place with, say, a refrigerator box, educated the other students about it, and used it appropriately, then kudos to them for going the extra mile. If not, than an investigation, not a crucifixion are certainly in order.

I am always suspicious of parents that are lobbying for personal financial gain instead of intelligent change....

Our autistic and developmentally delayed precious child benefits from iPad and other tablets. It's as though a switch turns on when she's allowed to use these types of technology. She loves them, and she will engage for lengthy periods that provide learning moments for her. The article quoted someone as saying --you don't have to teach the child the technology, he/she knows what to do with it. That has been so true in our experience. We are always amazed at her abilities in this area!

Had great success with the iPad app Elevated Math. Special needs students, esp. autistic kids, made fast progress in math by swiping forward and backward through the instruction. Not for very young children. Nine-years-old and up.

My son was prescribed Risperdal, we didn't use it, we just kept on with using a calm voice, keeping him safe from injury, helping him to learn self control so he would not escalate to violence. If your child is not in control you have to be, they need to know everything is going to be ok whatever they are faced with at that moment is not as big and horrible as it feels.
